Banaras Hindu University

An internationally reputed research institute, situated in the holy city of Varanasi, it was founded by the great nationalist leader, Bharat Ratna Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916, along with great personalities like Dr Annie Besant. The main campus of Banaras Hindu University is spread over 1300 acres of land. The campus layouts approximate a semicircle with intersecting roads laid out along the radii or in the arcs. Buildings crafted in the first half of the 20th century are fine examples of Indo-Gothic architecture. The university has 5 institutes, 16 faculties and 135 departments. The vast campus with its lush vegetation and serene environment stands out from the hassles of the busy city.

The Institute of Medical Sciences is one of the five institutes of the Banaras Hindu University and comprises three faculties, Faculty of Medicine, Dental Sciences and Ayurveda (Indian Medicine). Sir Sunderlal Hospital is a teaching hospital for the Institute of Medical Sciences. Established in 1926 with 96 beds, it has since been expanded to over 1000 beds and is the largest tertiary referral hospital in the region.

The Department of Geriatric Medicine is the youngest department of the Institute of Medical Sciences. It was created in 2018 and initiated the MD Geriatrics programme in 2020. The Department has two faculty, 2 senior residents, 1 senior resident fellow in Geriatric Rheumatology, 7 MD Geriatrics trainees, 2 medical officers, 1 post-doctoral and 1 PhD scholar. The department has been at the forefront of academic and research geriatrics in India with research interests focused on drug safety, neuropsychiatry, rheumatology and infections. The department also is in the upgradation process with the third National Center of Aging in India under construction.
